Struggling with Authenticity and Self-Projection
The speaker, as an only child, developed a defense mechanism of projecting strength and independence to the world. They struggle with the dichotomy between their authentic self and the self they project to others. They have experienced rejection when revealing their true self and sometimes feel that they should have pretended to be someone else. The speaker reflects on the pressure to be different and wonders if they should have lived a lie to make others happy. This struggle is further exemplified through an experience in 2019 when they launched a mission and felt unprepared for the attention and perception of their real self.
