Quality vs. Quantity in AI-Assisted Problem Solving
A study on AI-assisted problem-solving teams revealed that while AI groups produced a moderate stack of average quality ideas, human teams without AI produced ideas of varied quality. Surprisingly, graders assumed that the few great ideas were produced by AI-assisted teams when in reality, they were not. The study uncovered a cognitive bias known as the 'Halting Effect,' where individuals tend to believe that outcomes achieved with the assistance of technology are superior, even if they are not. The study highlighted that the natural interface of chat-based AI may make it challenging for humans to recognize the true source of innovative ideas, as demonstrated in past studies like the 1942 water jug experiment.
