Evolution operates through a slow, step-by-step process that doesn't involve intentional cleverness, rather it solves problems for organisms over time. For example, the fungus Ophiocordyceps has evolved mechanisms to evade detection and position its hosts optimally for development, showcasing a refined interaction with its environment. Fieldwork is crucial for scientific advancement in understanding such organisms; researchers must observe and track small-scale behaviors and life cycles in natural settings, which can take weeks of dedication in diverse habitats. The adaptability of this fungus is highlighted in its North Carolina variety, which cleverly circumvents seasonal changes by directing ants to attach to twigs instead of leaves, ensuring its life cycle can continue despite environmental fluctuations.
What’s on your mind? ZOMBIES. The planet is full of mind-controlling foes, and “Plight of the Living Dead” author Matt Simon researched deep and traveled the world to document tales of fungus-controlled zombie ants, bellies and brains full of worms, wasp bunkers, decapitated ants, brutal stings, hapless cockroaches, the attraction of light, moonlit skinny dipping, and the philosophy of where I stop and you begin. The two of us also discuss the Last of Us, of course.
