Ulysses Packs, and Facebook’s Broken Promises

To protect your weak future self, your strong present self must make irrevocable commitments. This concept, called Ulysses packs, is illustrated by the story of Ulysses and the sirens. Open source licenses, like the GPL and VSD license, are also examples of Ulysses packs because they cannot be easily revoked. Revocable licenses can lead to uncertainty, especially when investors are involved. Facebook's history of breaking promises reinforces the need for irrevocable commitments. As the saying goes, 'fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me'.
