Over the last 300 years, Euro-American British culture has secularized, viewing God as irrelevant to real public life, akin to a figurehead like a constitutional monarch. Western culture has treated God as a symbolic entity rather than a force of actual power, reminiscent of the ceremonial role of a monarch. The church has been complicit in this trend by retreating from proclaiming the gospel and the Bible as universal truths, conforming to the private sphere enforced by the Enlightenment Project.
