NOTE

Redefining Multitasking: Labels and Growth

Multitasking can be redefined as layering activities rather than trying to perform conflicting tasks simultaneously. Engaging in two activities that complement each other, like walking while conversing, enhances well-being without cognitive overload, whereas combining a complex task like work with active attention-requiring entertainment, such as TV, can hinder performance. Identifying oneself as 'bad' at multitasking or other skills can stifle growth by closing off the possibility of change. Labels often shape our self-perception and influence behavior; thus, claiming a negative label leads to a self-fulfilling prophecy. Adopting empowering labels, like 'focused' or 'indestructible,' can foster improvement and encourage practice, enabling the development of skills. Ultimately, it's essential to shift from limiting beliefs to positive affirmations that facilitate personal growth and adaptability.
