How to Increase Motivation & Drive

NOTE

The Dual Nature of Dopamine

Dopamine serves a dual role in human experience, intertwining pleasure and pain. When engaging in pleasurable activities, an initial surge of dopamine generates feelings of joy, but this pleasure diminishes with repeated exposure. Simultaneously, the associated pain response increases, creating a paradox where the pursuit of pleasure becomes intertwined with the desire to alleviate the discomfort of craving. This dynamic is prominently observed in behaviors such as drug seeking, where initial experiences yield significant pleasure, yet subsequent encounters offer less satisfaction while cravings heighten. Ultimately, much of the human drive for pleasure stems from a desire to mitigate the pain of longing, highlighting the complex interplay between reward and suffering in our behaviors.
