Importance of Apostolic Succession in Church Existence
The church can only exist if the authority of the apostles is transmitted through bishops. If this transmission is broken, the church is considered to no longer exist. The doctrine of apostolic succession is crucial for the church to be considered legitimate, as it forms a connection back to the apostles. Rome emphasizes this doctrine and believes that without it, Protestant churches cannot be considered churches in the full sense. There is also a debate on whether Anglican bishops truly fulfill the requirement of apostolic succession.
