Astrocytes play a crucial role in regulating synapses and the blood-brain barrier by storing glycogen that can be released as lactate for energy. Lactate is produced by tissues with or without oxygen as an energy source, and its abundance can increase when oxygen is limited, indicating the body's attempt to compensate for the lack of oxygen. In addition to glucose and lactate, the brain can also utilize ketones as energy substrates.
