Lecture III: Mimetic Rivalry and Girard's Theodicy | René Girard's Mimetic Theory

NOTE

Proximity and Inequality

By reducing real forms of inequality and bringing people closer together, the subjective experience of inequity can increase. Proximity leads to comparison, jealousy, and memetic rivalries, as observed by Alexis Tocqueville in America. When there are minimal inequalities, even slight variations can cause distress, fueling an insatiable desire for equality. In today's world, where inequalities between genders and races are diminishing, the perception of inequality can paradoxically increase.
