Modern Wisdom

NOTE

Cynicism and Naivete Are Two Sides of the Same Coin

Cynics, often perceived as more discerning, actually perform worse on cognitive tests and struggle to detect deception compared to non-cynics. This is because cynicism mirrors naivete; both involve uncritical assumptions—either trust in everyone or distrust in everyone—leading to a failure in evaluating evidence effectively. Such blanket beliefs hinder true learning and understanding. Interestingly, alcohol influences honesty, making liars less effective but improving our ability to detect lies, as it reduces overthinking that clouds judgment.
