High and low blood sugar can be caused by various factors such as lack of insulin, exercise, stress, and autoimmune problems. Stress hormones like cortisol and epinephrine can raise blood sugar levels. Type 1 diabetes, which Dr. Nader has, is more rare and is typically diagnosed in childhood. It may be more prevalent in colder climates and during winter months. It is caused by an autoimmune problem where the immune system attacks the pancreas.
