Before the era of Kickstarter, the Oculus Rift was a prototype, essentially a cell phone attached to ski goggles. Advancements in high-resolution displays and sensor technologies made it feasible to create a consumer-friendly VR device. The increased sensor quality from the 90s and the rise of sensors in mobile devices created a favorable environment for consumer VR products. Despite the focus on consumer software, the potential of the consumer electronics pitch was evident.
