NAC: A Drug of Last Resort

When treating patients for liver problems, the timing of treatment depends on the level of toxicity. Patients who come in early can wait for test results, while those who come in later need immediate treatment. However, not all patients who claim to have ingested something harmful require treatment, as sometimes their symptoms are not indicative of liver damage. While NAC is generally effective in treating liver toxicity, there are adverse effects and it should not be given to everybody. Anaphylactoid reactions are one of the documented reactions to NAC due to the speed of infusion.
