Communication is not just about being understood, but also about the understanding others take away. Instead of thinking that communication ends when we speak, it actually ends when we hear our own words repeated back to us. This is why high-risk professions have a practice called a brief back, where the listener repeats what they've heard. This makes invisible miscommunication visible. Despite the effectiveness of this practice, it is not commonly used in the office, leading to wasted time and miscommunication.
