TikTok can operate the way it does because it is designed to be censored. That algorithmic feed hyper concentrates content onto a small enough number of items each day that they literally have humans scan each one, look at it, and approve it before it goes up. Facebook has internal studies that say if they give you more stuff from your family and your friends, you get less violence, less hate speech, less immunity for free. And so the world that they're choosing to go towards is one where you have to do censorship to be safe. Do you still own Facebook stock? I think I do.
Frances Haugen, the former Facebook employee who turned over a trove of documents known as the Facebook Files, speaks with Kara Swisher and Casey Newton at Code 2022. What was the impact of Haugen’s disclosure, and what does she still wish to see? And, ultimately, was it worth it?
Recorded on September 6 in Los Angeles.
