Sovereignty Shapes the Cross-Strait Dilemma

Beijing's cross-strait dilemma centers on the issue of sovereignty, rooted in the historical context of the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949. The regime claims to be the sole rightful government of all of China, denying Taiwan's Republic of China the same recognition. Over the past 70 years, the global shift towards recognizing Beijing's position, including that of the United States, highlights the significance of this sovereignty claim. From Beijing's viewpoint, any Taiwanese leadership that does not acknowledge this sovereignty or recognize Taiwan as part of China is deemed unacceptable. While there are various factors influencing Beijing's stance on Taiwan, the semiconductor industry is not among the top priorities, which mainly revolve around sovereignty issues.
