People tend to expect hard things to be challenging for interesting reasons, but the reality is that the majority of hard things are difficult due to mundane factors, particularly the immense coordination challenge of aligning numerous individual agents towards a common goal. This coordination challenge demands a colossal amount of energy in society. While technology like AI and the internet has marginally changed this dynamic, the fundamental aspect of coordinating many individuals remains a significant and expected feature of any complex adaptive system. It is a fundamental characteristic that emerges in any plausible universe, and the increasing information transfer rate may allow larger coordination structures to be feasible, but the coordination challenge itself is a fundamental and intrinsic aspect of complex systems.
