Developing a Sense of Self in BPD and ADHD
The lack of developing a core sense of self is a key factor in BPD, where individuals may define themselves externally by their actions or relationships. Treatment for BPD involves developing this sense of self. While identity issues can also occur in ADHD, they are not inherent to the disorder. Individuals with ADHD can have a solid sense of self, possibly defined through an ADHD lens. Maturity lags and executive functioning delays in ADHD can make it challenging for individuals to form their identity, leading to potential delays in growing up and defining their niche. Individuals with ADHD may constantly search for where they fit, similar to the Goldilocks syndrome, trying to find the perfect fit for themselves.
