Has Freedom Failed Us? A Debate

Honestly with Bari Weiss

NOTE

Liberalism in America

Liberty is understood as the absence of constraint, or the absence of obstacles. And in order to achieve this kind of liberty, liberalism as an ism ends up dsmantling either through soft, insidious forms, or the outright use of political power. Liberalism worked in America because it was never fully liberal. It was never fully defined by this modern definition of freedom. We're not just rights bearing creatures. We're also duty bearing creatures to all these institutions. But here's the problem, is that when liberalism becomes an ism, it ends up dismantling those structures that make a kind of responsible freedom possible.
