Lactulose Treatment and Managing Triggers in Hepatic Encephalopathy
Lactulose is crucial in the management of hepatic encephalopathy, as it induces bowel movements to eliminate toxins effectively. Administering lactulose regularly rather than on an 'as needed' basis is essential. Lactulose can alleviate hyponatremia and confusion in patients with hepatic encephalopathy. Hypernatremia may arise due to water loss from lactulose therapy, necessitating careful monitoring and hydration. Hypokalemia should be promptly treated as it can affect kidney function. Renal replacement therapy should be considered for patients with hepatic encephalopathy who develop acute kidney injury or potential hepatorenal syndrome, although dialysis is typically not required.
