Until 1994, the prevailing belief was that the internet would never be a business or profitable industry. Major tech companies, including Bill Gates, did not take the internet seriously and focused on developing proprietary networks like the information superhighway. AOL, a consumer version of BBS, only connected with the internet in 1993, transforming its subscribers into internet users.
