Explaining curtailment

Curtailment occurs when energy generation, particularly from solar sources, exceeds total demand due to inflexible baseload resources, like nuclear plants, that can’t easily adjust their output. On sunny days, especially in regions like California, excessive solar generation creates a scenario where the combined power from solar and these inflexible resources surpasses immediate energy needs. As a result, surplus energy must be discarded, which is referred to as curtailment. This highlights the challenges of managing renewable energy generation in an environment with limited flexibility to adjust to fluctuations in demand.
