Balancing Responsibility and Ego Development

Individuals with personality disorders tend to take too little responsibility, while neurotic individuals often take on too much. Neurotic people are more likely to seek therapy as they feel overwhelmed by responsibilities or difficult emotions. Those who deflect responsibility are less likely to engage in introspection or therapy. This imbalance is linked to ego development; in the first half of life, the focus is on developing a strong, flexible, and well-adjusted ego. In cases of the dark triad, ego development has become exaggerated and detrimental.
