Adaptation Varies: Genetics Over Strategies

Metabolic adaptation varies significantly among individuals, largely influenced by genetics and the amount of weight lost. There is no consistent correlation between the degree of metabolic adaptation and weight regain, suggesting that high levels of metabolic adaptation may complicate sustained weight loss. Contrary to common beliefs, increasing food intake or reverse dieting does not inherently boost metabolism outside of promoting weight gain, which subsequently raises metabolic rate due to increased body tissue. Additionally, metabolism remains relatively stable during adulthood, and individuals with obesity do not inherently possess a slower metabolism compared to lean individuals; their energy expenditure per kilogram of body mass is comparable.
