How to Find Hope in a Cynical World
The Happiness Lab with Dr. Laurie Santos
The Myth of Cynicism as Moral
Cynicism is often perceived as a moral stance, particularly by those who feel disillusioned by societal inequality or structural injustices. Many argue that hope is a privilege reserved for the fortunate, while cynics claim a more realistic view of the world, focusing on its flaws. However, research indicates that while cynics recognize the issues, their cynical outlook inhibits proactive engagement with these problems. Cynics tend to withdraw from social movements and civic participation, ultimately maintaining the status quo. This lack of trust can be co-opted by propagandists and authoritarian figures who thrive on division and disengagement among the populace. Thus, while cynicism may highlight the world's harms, it does not contribute to meaningful solutions or collective action against those very issues.
