The Link Between Vegan Diets and Depression: Observational Studies
Observational studies indicate that vegan and vegetarian diets, particularly vegan diets, may increase the risk of depression. It is unclear whether the dietary pattern causes depression or if individuals prone to depression are more likely to adopt a vegan diet. Animal products contain nutrients that support good mental health, and a study found that women who didn't consume the recommended servings of red meat were at a higher risk of developing major depression. Red meat contains brain-supporting nutrients such as zinc, vitamin B12, and folate.
