When the email team at Amazon started sending recommendations, they initially gave credit for purchases made through those emails. However, this led to spam as the team sent more emails to earn more credit. To solve this problem, Amazon modeled the cost of spamming and found that the value lost from unsubscribe was a few dollars. This led to a trade-off between the money generated from emails and the long-term value lost. By incorporating this formula, it was discovered that more than half of the campaigns sent were actually negative. This insight revolutionized how Amazon sends campaigns.
