One of the ways that undermines team work is when team members make attributions against one another based on their actions or behaviors. This often leads to labeling or making negative assumptions about someone's character, such as laziness or lack of intelligence. However, these attributions are often misguided because different people have different ways of getting things done and different strengths. What may seem lazy or careless to one person, might actually be a thoughtful approach for another person. Similarly, someone might not excel at generating new ideas but can be effective in pushing things through to completion. It is important to replace these false attributions with knowledge and understanding of others' unique gifts and work styles. By recognizing and accepting these differences, one can avoid making unfair assumptions and foster a more productive and harmonious team dynamic.
Perhaps the most immediate benefit of the Working Genius model is how it allows us to overcome the fundamental attribution error. This week, Pat, Cody and Tracy discuss how we can replace judgement and toxicity on our teams with understanding and grace.
