Exploring the Nature of Sin and Evil

Sin is considered to be contrary to human nature, a result of living in a broken, sinful world. St. John Damocene highlights that everything created by God is good, but when something acts against its nature, it becomes bad. Dorotheus of Gaza adds that passions are not natural and are like shadows that only exist through the absence of light. Evil is not a standalone entity but rather a deficiency of good, a distortion of what is created as good.
