NOTE

Adaptation Fuels Economic Transition

The significant decline in agricultural employment from 50% to 2% in the U.S. labor force over the 19th and early 20th centuries resulted from technological advancements such as combined harvesters and tractors, leading to a large displacement of workers. Fortunately, this shift coincided with growth in manufacturing, which began hiring more skilled workers, thereby providing new job opportunities. While many displaced agricultural workers did not transition directly into clerical roles, they found alternative employment, and their children benefited from the expanding job market. The high school movement played a crucial role in this transition by enhancing educational access, enabling individuals to take advantage of new economic opportunities.
