NOTE

Learning Through Observation and Teaching

Independent and social learning are two fundamental ways animals acquire knowledge. Independent learning occurs when an individual learns from personal experience, such as the painful lesson of touching fire. Social learning, on the other hand, involves observing the experiences of others, allowing individuals to gain knowledge without direct experience of the risk, such as learning that red berries are dangerous by watching another suffer from consuming them. This method enhances learning efficiency and is seen in various species, including chimpanzees and elephants. Notably, humans engage in advanced forms of social learning through teaching, intentionally sharing knowledge and skills with one another, a practice that is exceedingly rare in the animal kingdom but also present in some other primates and possibly dolphins.
