Reality and Agency in the Metaverse
Reality is a philosophical question and can be defined as anything that pushes back against our agency. The metaverse, although running on real computers and featuring digital objects, lacks non-human agency. It is a unique reality where other agents are human beings and digital objects are creations of algorithms, though these algorithms can have unpredictable emergent properties. However, non-human actors such as animals, microbes, trees, and natural phenomena are absent. This creates a distinct reality that separates us from nature.
