Elias Budinow and the Cherokee Council
After realizing the futility of fighting against removal, Elias Budinow shifted his focus from Cherokee sovereignty to preserving Cherokee culture. He suggested signing a new treaty with the U.S. government to secure better terms for the Cherokee. However, the majority of the Cherokee Council led by Chief John Ross refused any compromise, leading to Budinow's resignation as the editor of the Cherokee Phoenix. The Council's division on negotiation strategies diminished the hope for retaining Cherokee land in Georgia. The financial constraints eventually led to the downfall of the Cherokee Phoenix newspaper.
