Maintaining a fresh approach to work and life is important and valuable. The ability to look at each moment with a beginner's mind is crucial. However, it can be challenging to keep that freshness over time. As a writer, the process of generating a simulation of a fresh mind has improved, and it now takes only a short break to regain the perspective of a first-time reader. Having someone to provide feedback on freshness also helps in determining when to make changes and when to stay humble. Overall, the key is being aware of the concept of freshness and acknowledging that we may not always possess it.
George Saunders is the author of eleven books including, Tenth of December, which was a finalist for the National Book Award and won the inaugural Folio Prize in 2013 (for the best work of fiction in English) and the Story Prize (best short story collection). He has received MacArthur and Guggenheim Fellowships, the PEN/Malamud Prize for excellence in the short story, and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. George also teaches in the Creative Writing Program at Syracuse University.
