Religious Trauma and High-Control Religion: An Interview with Anna Clark Miller, LPC, LMHC

The Modern Therapist's Survival Guide with Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy

NOTE

Rigid Thinking and Religious Trauma

Religious trauma often leads to rigid thinking due to the influence of high control groups which shape beliefs as right or wrong, good or bad, in or out. This rigidity limits nuance, curiosity, and exploration, fostering a binary mindset. This trauma also triggers self-defeating patterns like learned helplessness, external locus of control, perfectionism, overworking, and self-neglect. Shame is a significant symptom as well, contributing to the overall impact of religious trauma.
