Opinions on Low-Wage Migrants and Labor Movement

Historically, the Democratic Party and the labor movement opposed the importation of low-wage migrants due to the understanding that it enables large employers to drive down labor costs through corporate arbitrage. This type of migration undermines the wages of working-class individuals, strains social services, and impedes productivity growth. Some employers prefer vulnerable workers who they can dominate, leading to support for open borders from libertarians and certain factions. Presently, this stance has shifted towards being seen as a progressive position, though it serves to sustain the lifestyles of the upper middle class by importing exploitable workers. The contemporary exploitation of vulnerable workers is wrapped in a guise of humanitarianism by the privileged, who benefit from cheap labor while claiming moral high ground. Supporting such exploitation under the pretense of progressiveness amounts to backing mass exploitation.
