1. The Future of Democracy

The Reith Lectures

NOTE

Finding Compromises and Reforming British Democracy

Conversations across the political divide can lead to painful but mutually acceptable compromises, reflected in final legislation. Citizens' assemblies encourage thoughtful and kind decision-making, contrasting with negative tone among lawmakers. Reforming the UK's first-past-the-post electoral system to a more proportional one would ensure better representation, as currently it leaves out a significant portion of the population. Proportional systems enhance democracy by forcing parties to engage with the entire electorate and allowing more diverse opinions to be represented. Although coalitions may be frustrating, they are essential for agreeable disagreement and effective democracy. The unfinished democratic history of the UK requires continuous efforts to secure a more equal and representative future for upcoming generations.
