Prof. Murray Shanahan - Machines Don't Think Like Us

Machine Learning Street Talk (MLST)

NOTE

Beware of Anthropomorphism and the Need for New Language

Anthropomorphism can lead us to overestimate or underestimate the capabilities of systems like large language models, chatbots, etc. Such systems can exhibit very human-like behavior, making us assume they will behave similarly in all contexts, which is not always the case. Therefore, it is crucial to develop new forms of vocabulary and ways of thinking to accurately describe and understand the behavior of these systems, especially as they start being valued more in society. As new technologies emerge, our language will naturally evolve to adapt to them, though disagreements on how to talk about them may cause disruptions in the process.
