Meetings that have been on the calendar for years are often viewed as unproductive. Declining or deleting meetings should be seen as a gift and not a sign of indifference. Attendees should feel empowered to turn down meetings they cannot contribute to. Meeting attendance should not be solely for signaling commitment. The financial cost and opportunity cost of meetings should be considered. Shopify has implemented a tool to calculate the estimated cost of each meeting. Regularly evaluating meeting norms is also recommended.
