Caffeine's Hidden Costs: Sleep Disrupted

Caffeine can significantly affect sleep quality and duration, with a half-life of about five to six hours in the average adult, meaning substantial amounts may still be in the system during sleep hours. Consuming caffeine too late in the day can lead to difficulties falling asleep due to its stimulant properties, increase anxiety levels, and create a racing mind that hampers sleep onset. Additionally, caffeine contributes to sleep fragmentation, causing more frequent awakenings throughout the night and reducing overall sleep efficiency. Importantly, even if individuals believe they sleep well after consuming caffeine, they may still experience a reduction in deep sleep, which is often unnoticed but essential for restorative rest.
