In the early 80s, 40% of American firms were startups under five years old, but by 2018, it decreased to 29%. However, a resurgence in entrepreneurial activity occurred in 2020-2021 due to pandemic disruptions, leading to a sustained increase in startups. This trend has transformed the US into a thriving hub of startups, manifesting an 80% increase in business formation over the past four years, with approximately 5.5 million companies established annually.

There has been a slow strangling of freedom in the territory where pro-democracy activists have been convicted; an annual vigil for the victims of the Tiananmen Square crackdown in Beijing in 1989 has been replaced by a food fair.
