The new atheists, including Sam Harris, Dawkins, and Hitchins, went beyond proving religion as untrue to argue that it was unnecessary or harmful. However, challenging Islamic extremists with logic only seemed to fail in the face of de facto blasphemy laws enforced by violent individuals. This led to the realization that liberating from dogmatic Christians delivered people into the hands of a more dangerous religious elite without government protection. While new atheists highlighted the scientific inaccuracy and historical evil in religion, the belief that these incidents were accidental byproducts of atheism is considered a misunderstanding of the impact of lack of religious faith on human perception.
