The 10,000 Steps a Day Myth
The popular idea of doing 10,000 steps a day originated from the naming of a Japanese pedometer before the Tokyo Olympics in the 1960s, based on an auspicious number without scientific evidence. However, research shows that the average hunter-gatherer walks between 10,000 to 18,000 steps, and at around 7,000 to 8,000 steps per day the health outcomes plateau. While 10,000 steps is not a perfect number, it is a reasonable goal to aim for, as it aligns with the activity levels of a hunter-gatherer.
