This behavior is attributed to female intrasexual competition, where women downplay their successes to avoid being derogated or manipulated by others. The Abilene paradox is also discussed, highlighting how a group can make contrary decisions because each member assumes the others approve of it, leading to a situation where individuals act contrary to their own desires.
