In Our Time
Karl Barth's Involvement in an Industrial Town and Liberal Theology
Karl Barth, a theologian trained in liberal schools in Germany, found himself in a predicament when he was assigned to an industrial town. His theological uncertainty led him to become involved in the Social Democratic Party and the Workers Union, advocating for the rights of workers over the factory owners. His involvement led to conflict with the owners of the textile factories, as he was deeply concerned about the workers' meager earnings. Liberal theology, on the other hand, was a movement that emphasized the freedom of the individual to choose which parts of the faith to accept, leading to criticism of church tradition and hierarchy. It also placed importance on historical proof, analyzing biblical texts from a historical perspective, and was closely tied to the middle class in Germany rather than the labor workers.
