The Search for the Locus of Willpower
The search for the locus of willpower has led researchers to the prefrontal cortex, particularly the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, which is involved in cognitive control, although cognitive control does not equate to 100% willpower. Willpower seems to be tied to the reward value of a behavior. Attempts to find the locus of consciousness, and hence willpower, have been unsuccessful so far. Speculation suggests that individuals tend to confabulate, creating stories that align with their perception of the world, possibly leading to a belief in personal willpower. Studies have shown that brain activity precedes conscious awareness of decisions or behaviors, raising questions about the concept of free will.
