The Negative Consequences of Social Media

Social media platforms have perfected the art of understanding human emotions and use psychology to keep users engaged. Spending excessive time on social media can be detrimental to one's life. Engaging with social media rarely leads to feeling better immediately afterwards, yet people are still drawn back to it due to the dopamine hit they get from variable rewards. Social media, along with other distractions like Netflix, can take people out of their thinking minds, temporarily alleviating anxiety or negative thoughts. However, the content consumed on these platforms can often make individuals feel inadequate or less than. To combat the negative consequences of excessive screen time, practicing mindfulness and meditation is important to gain control over the thinking mind and reduce reliance on these digital distractions.
