Success is often measured in comparison to others, and even when things objectively improve, if they improve at a slower rate than others, it can still feel like a loss. The prevalence of social media has greatly amplified this issue over the last decade. Status within society is often associated with factors such as the number of friends, quality of marriage or family, and the success of one's children.
