Historical witch trials involved brutal and absurd methods to determine innocence or guilt, such as 'witch dunking' which subjected accused individuals to drowning. The logic behind these methods was widely questioned even at the time. Witch trials were often driven by superstition and fear, as well as serving as money-making schemes for some witch hunters.
